The Birth of the Tuxedo
In 1860, modern formalwear as we know it was born; Henry Poole & Co. in London, England created a short, tailless smoking jacket for the Prince of Wales, who was seeking an alternative to traditional White Tie for evening events. At the time, high society in England was starting to adopt a more informal dress code for evenings, and the tailless jacket grew popular, not only with the Prince of Wales but with men throughout the country. Upon a visit to England in 1886 at the invitation of the Prince, American James Potter was exposed to the tailless dinner jacket and was so enamored of the fashion that he brought it back home with him to New York.
The Lorillards, a wealthy and well-respected family within the community who owned and operated the Tuxedo Park Club in Tuxedo, New York, were inspired by Potter's short dinner jacket and decided to wear it to the club's inaugural Autumn Ball in the fall of 1886. Though Pierre Lorillard IV, the founder of the club, decided not to wear the less formal attire at the last moment, his son Griswold and many of his friends did opt for the revolutionary design. Legend has it that when guests asked about the jacket, friends of the Lorillard family responded that the men were wearing tailless jackets because they were from Tuxedo (as the jacket had grown popular at the Tuxedo Park Club over the summer) but the answer was misinterpreted as meaning the jackets were called tuxedos. The new name caught on immediately, and black tie and tailless jackets have been known as tuxedos in the United States ever since. Though inspired by late 19th century British fashion, the Tuxedo was born in New York, and is a uniquely American contribution to men's formalwear.
